Tip #2. Cleaning Up your Manuscript

Spurious Spaces

The “howto”

  1. Open your MS Word document
  2. Save As a new name – you don’t want to be in the position of not being able to recover, should things go awry.
  3. Press the key combination “Ctrl+H” – control + “h”
  4. You will see a prompt appear called “Find and Replace”
  5. In “Find what:” type double space – that is two space characters, not ‘double space’
  6. In “Replace with:” type a single space – that is a single space character, not ‘single space’
  7. Next click ‘Replace All’
  8. Keep clicking ‘Replace All’ until the messages comes back telling you, ‘We made 0 replacements’.
  9. You’re done. Save your corrected document.

The next page describes how to remove unnecessary new lines.
